IGI certificate: what it is, what it states, and why it inspires confidence

Buying a diamond isn't an everyday occurrence. Whether it's for an engagement, an anniversary, or a gift to yourself, you want to be sure you're choosing quality and that you're getting what you see. An IGI certificate (also known as an IGI Diamond Report) is one of the most important documents in this process. Simply put, it's the independent "passport" of your diamond.

At Vondel Diamonds, this is how we approach it:

  • All diamonds of 1 carat and above receive diamond certification.
  • All jewelry with diamonds also receives jewelry certification.

Because trust is not just in the stone, but in the entire piece.

What is an IGI certificate?

IGI stands for International Gemological Institute: an international gemstone and diamond laboratory that evaluates and reports on diamonds based on objective quality characteristics. An IGI report documents, among other things, the 4Cs (carat, color, clarity, cut) and contains identification data that allows you to recognize and verify your diamond.

IGI and lab-grown diamonds: what does IGI look for?

Lab-grown diamonds are evaluated on the same core points as natural diamonds: the 4Cs remain the basis. IGI also states that they screen lab-grown diamonds for origin (natural, lab-grown, or simulant) using modern technology, and that information about the growth process and any treatments may be included in the comments.

What is on an IGI Diamond Report?

An IGI report is designed to be readable, even if you are not a gemologist. These are the components you will most often see:

Identification: report number, shape and dimensions

  • A unique Report ID / Report Number
  • Shape (e.g. round, oval, emerald)
  • Dimensions (length/width/depth)

This section helps you identify and compare your diamond.

The 4Cs: the core of the evaluation

Carat (carat weight)

Carat is the weight of the diamond. More carat often means a larger diamond, but the visible size also depends on the shape and proportions (how the diamond is cut). Therefore, two diamonds with the same carat can still appear different.

Color

Color describes how colorless a diamond is. The scale usually runs from D (colorless) to Z (visible tint). Small differences are often subtle to the naked eye, but they can affect the appearance and the price, especially for larger stones or certain settings.

Clarity

Clarity refers to internal inclusions and external characteristics (blemishes). Most are small and often not visible without magnification, but they are factored into the grade. Clarity helps you understand how "clean" the diamond is, without necessarily needing the highest grade to choose a beautiful diamond.

Cut (cut grade/quality of light performance)

The cut does not refer to the shape (like oval or emerald), but to how well the diamond has been cut. This cut quality determines how much light the diamond reflects, and thus how lively it appears. The certificate also often includes polish and symmetry: details about the finish and the precision of the cut facets.

Diamond Certification vs. Jewelry Certification (Why Vondel Diamonds Does Both)

Many people only think of the loose stone when they hear "certificate." But for a ring or earrings, you also want certainty about the entire piece of jewelry.

That's why Vondel Diamonds works with two levels:

  1. Diamond Certification (from 1 carat): focuses on the diamond itself, objective quality data.
  2. Jewelry Certification (all jewelry with diamonds): describes the piece of jewelry as a whole (e.g., metal, hallmarks/stamps, and identification of set stones where possible). IGI states that reports for finished jewelry describe the piece and (for center stones) provide the 4Cs to the extent that the setting allows.

Practical advantage: you not only get "proof of the stone," but also documentation that suits a piece of jewelry you wear, cherish, and pass on.

Common misconceptions (short and clear)

"A certificate is the same as an appraisal."

Not necessarily. A grading report documents quality/characteristics; an appraisal usually concerns value/insurance.

"If it's IGI, I don't need to look at anything else."

A certificate is a foundation. Your final choice also depends on what you find beautiful: shape, appearance, setting, and how the jewelry feels.

"All certificates are equal."

No: always check what the report precisely contains and if you can verify it online.

An IGI certificate is not an "extra." It is peace of mind. Especially when you choose a diamond for a moment you still want to feel later.
