IGI Certificate: What it is (and why it gives you peace of mind)

You buy a diamond with your heart, but you want to be able to say with certainty: this is what we chose. The IGI certificate (also known as: IGI grading report) is the independent "passport" of a diamond. It describes the characteristics of the stone and establishes its quality, so you know what you are buying and what you can compare.

What is IGI?

IG stands for International Gemological Institute. The institute issues reports for diamonds and gemstones and offers consumers the possibility to verify reports online.

IGI for lab-grown diamonds

For lab-grown diamonds, IGI offers specific reports. The report describes the jewelry/diamond(s) and assesses the characteristics of the center stone, including the 4 Cs.

This is precisely what many people need: lab-grown is real diamond, but you want to be able to see the quality just as transparently as with mined diamonds.

FAQs

An IGI certificate (IGI grading report) is an independent report detailing the characteristics of your diamond: including carat, cut, color, clarity, and a unique report number. It is the "passport" you can use for comparison and verification.

The IGI report is not a marketing label, but an objective assessment of the stone. Lab-grown diamonds are still real diamonds (same material and properties), and the report transparently records their quality.

A center stone from 1 carat upwards usually comes with an accompanying report. For jewelry containing diamonds weighing less than 1 carat, an accompanying jewelry certificate is provided.

The report number is on the IGI document itself. Sometimes this number is also (partially) laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle (only visible under magnification). If this is important to you, you can have it checked during the fitting.

Some reports are purely about the diamond (loose), others about the piece of jewelry in which the diamond is set. With jewelry reports, the assessment can sometimes depend on what is visible (“as mounting permits”). This is precisely why we like to show you what you're looking at in the store.
